Radisys Becomes Commercial Systems Integrator for ONOS CORD Project

Collaborates with ON.Lab to integrate ONOS and DCEngine; Contributes FlowEngine technology to Mobile CORD

ONS Summit, Santa Clara, March 15, 2016Radisys® Corporation (NASDAQ: RSYS), the services acceleration company, today announced it has become one of the leading systems integrators for CORD. CORD, an abbreviation for Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter offers an open service delivery platform designed to provide data center economies and cloud agility to service providers transforming Central Offices into telco optimized data centers. Radisys’ CORD combines a deployable hardware blueprint together with a complete open source software stack and a suite of professional services to enable operators to quickly and easily leverage the benefits of commodity building blocks in their central office transformation projects. As a leading systems integrator for CORD, Radisys will help service providers and the community turn Residential, Enterprise and Mobile CORD proofs-of-concept into deployable carrier-grade solutions by offering end-to-end world class support for CORD integration and commercial deployment on Radisys’ DCEngine™ hyperscale data center product.

“The vendor community is critical to helping service providers evolve their central offices as they seek to move services to the edge of the network using SDN and NFV technologies, prepare for 5G and improve agility and enhance the overall subscriber experience,” said Guru Parulkar, co-founder and executive director, ON.Lab and ONOS Board Chairman. “Radisys’ deep and proven expertise in SDN, open hardware and complex telecommunication software systems make them an ideal integrator for CORD. We are very pleased to have them stepping into this critical role.”

In addition to acting as a systems integrator for CORD, Radisys is an active and critical contributing vendor to Mobile CORD (M-CORD), an initiative that integrates the CORD framework into service providers’ mobile network architecture to enable an agile, service-driven environment that can dynamically respond to real-time subscriber demands. Radisys’ mobile expertise helps to unify the critical integration path in EPC (Evolved Packet Core) environments and the company has contributed its award-winning SDN platform, FlowEngine™ as a key data/forwarding plane component into the M-CORD blueprint. The revolutionary approach of M-CORD and Radisys’ market leadership as systems integrator in enabling mobile infrastructure solutions will help transform service providers’ mobile infrastructure and increase their monetization by accelerating new innovative services.

M-CORD brings together leading ONOS service provider partners and forward-thinking collaborators in a progressive effort to construct the next-generation mobile edge architecture. Through the integration of open SDN, NFV and cloud principles into the mobile network, M-CORD offers service providers considerable opportunities to customize their edge services with cloud-based economies and agility. The delivery of the M-CORD platform not only generates new opportunities for competitive mass market solutions, but also enables the supply chain efficiencies needed for the industry to provide cutting-edge innovation to consumers at affordable prices.

“Radisys brings unique capabilities to the table with its FlowEngine intelligent traffic distribution technology, contributing a solution to M-CORD that is open and flexible with its support for OpenFlow interfaces,” said Bill Snow, vice president of engineering, ON.Lab. “By enabling the disaggregation of LTE EPC data plane components from the rest of the network, FlowEngine allows for independent scaling and reduces CapEx and OpEx costs from the network.”

As a key CORD collaborator, Radisys will lead the progressive effort to:

  • Facilitate the interoperability and integration testing of multi-vendor elements in the LTE networks
  • Enhance the LTE Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW) software to support control and data plane separation, enabling more dynamic and independent scale out management
  • Enable integration of disaggregated PGW components with the ONOS open SDN software platform, thus enabling increased network efficiency, programmability and elasticity in the LTE network
  • Integrate PGW service composition with the XOS service orchestration environment for CORD, advancing service-driven mobile edge infrastructure as a critical path in the 5G architecture

“Radisys is committed to its role as a strategic contributor to CORD and M-CORD projects with the dedication of significant engineering and integration resources,” said Bryan Sadowski, vice president, FlowEngine Product Marketing, Radisys. “Our focus on integrating open-source SDN to enable new cloud-based services in the Central Office will transform service providers’ ability to accelerate and monetize new services through open hyperscale data center, SDN and NFV technologies.”

About CORD

CORD (Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter) combines NFV, SDN and the elasticity of commodity clouds to bring datacenter economies and service agility to the Telecom Central Office. An open reference implementation of CORD uses commodity servers and white-box switches, coupled with open source software that includes OpenStack, Docker, ONOS and XOS. This reference implementation is a general and extensible platform that supports a variety of domains and business requirements (e.g., residential, enterprise, mobile), and is also sufficiently complete to support field trials.

About ONOS project

ONOS is the open source SDN networking operating system for Service Provider networks architected for high performance, scale and availability. The ONOS ecosystem comprises ON.Lab and organizations that are funding and contributing to the ONOS initiative. These include AT&T, NTT Communications, SK Telecom, China Unicom, Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena, Cisco, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Huawei, Intel, NEC and Nokia. See the full list of members, including ONOS’ collaborators, and learn how you can get involved with ONOS at onosproject.org.

About ON.Lab

Open Networking Lab (ON.Lab) is a non-profit organization founded by SDN inventors and leaders from Stanford University and UC Berkeley to foster an open source community for developing tools and platforms to realize the full potential of SDN. ON.Lab brings innovative ideas from leading edge research and delivers high quality open source platforms on which members of its ecosystem and the industry can build real products and solutions.
