Chunghwa Telecom Completes Proof of Concept for Open Access Network
In response to the development trend of software-defined everything, cloud native, and open networking, Chunghwa Telecom teamed up with partner suppliers to demonstrate a multi-vendor Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) system as an open access network in Taiwan on June 29th. The system is based on the software functions running on the general cloud infrastructure and the network equipment from local suppliers. Besides providing high-speed broadband access and IPTV/MOD services, it achieves flexible hardware construction and rapid software customization. As the international leading telecoms in the United States and Germany have already developed commercial use cases, Chunghwa Telecom is the first operator in Taiwan to independently carry out multi-vendor integration and successfully verified the open access network architecture.
Based on the experience in FTTH deployment and maintenance, Chunghwa Telecom invited local and global suppliers to participate in this joint effort. By incorporating XGS-PON OLT network equipment of Edgecore, XGS-PON ONU network of Zyxel and Alpha, the virtualized OLT software functions of foreign suppliers Netsia, Radisys, and STL (Sterlite Technologies Limited) (Note), Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories successfully completed the integration of the open access network system.
