Radisys Commerical-Grade vMRF Gains Recognition at OPNFV

On June 12, an Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV) Summit was held in Asia (Beijing) for the first time since OPNFV’s formation in 2014. I recently returned from this conference, an event that further emphasized both the global recognition and advancements of OPNFV technology and its progression towards largescale commercial deployments. Numerous carriers, vendors, and open source communities from across the globe were in attendance and the conference tracks included keynotes from HPE, Ericsson, Intel, Nokia, Huawei, Red Hat, NEC, ZTE, among others.

The significant 4th release of OPNFV “Danube”is another key indication that a more complete solution is emerging and will be widely embraced. This is evidenced by the focus of OPNFV embracing the proposed ONAP based orchestration, and data/media plane acceleration technologies along with continuous integration and continuous deployment management capabilities. This consolidation effort, born out of AT&T’s ECOMP and OPEN-O has led to the adoption of the Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP).

AT&T’s presentation on VES (VNF Event Stream) really caught my attention. VES, an essential ONAP/ECOMP component, enables all Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) to adhere to a common event data model in order for all VNFs to be orchestrated based on policy driven management, full elastic scalability, and lifecycle management. The AT&T presentation pointed to the Radisys vMRF (virtualized Media Resource Function) as a commercial-grade VNF and described how it  is integrated with VES/ONAP. This is a great testimonial to us and provides a complete working reference to the industry for other VNF providers.

It is apparent to me, especially after attending this conference that OPNFV, OpenStack, ONAP, and OCP are rapidly emerging as the perfect combination for realizing a fully virtualized cloud infrastructure. Radisys is in a leadership position to further drive this transformation and we will continue to be instrumental in enabling Network Operators achieve network virtualization.
