The T40: Tackling Major Network Challenges

We just announced the expansion of our ATCA T-Series family with the introduction of the T40, an ATCA-based 40G platform. I could use this entire blog to discuss the technical details of this exciting release (and there are many!), but instead I want to use this time to look at how our new solution fits into the big picture of the mobile industry today. We all know that traffic growth is off the charts. This dynamic time in the marketplace really is putting the squeeze on operators and, as a result, TEMS. I describe their challenges in the list below (in no particular order):

  1. Decreasing cost-per-bit to, in turn, lower service delivery costs. In other words, efficiency, efficiency, efficiency.
  2. Increasing core network performance to keep pace with the huge up-tick in access speeds that LTE delivers. Simply put, operators need the flexibility to expand the capabilities of the core of the network to handle all of the new services consumers are demanding.
  3. Finding time to dedicate to new application development. If TEMs can shorten the R&D cycle for the majority of their next-gen infrastructure, they can redirect their R&D spend to focus solely on building their unique applications and increase market velocity.

The new T40 was designed with all three of the above challenges in mind. The platform addresses the operators’ struggle to increase service profitability by delivering a 50% cost-per-bit reduction over its predecessor 10G systems. The T40 also delivers flexibility and performance critical for keeping up with increasing high-speed mobile data traffic, ensuring the core network does not become the next choke point in the network. Lastly, the platform provides TEMs with a new R&D model in a form of an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) model that allows them to focus solely on building their application.
